Port-Vendres: a Mediterranean city between maritime traditions and exceptional landscapes

Located in the south of the Pyrénées-Orientales, Port-Vendres is an emblematic coastal town in the Occitanie region, nestled between the Mediterranean and the first foothills of the Pyrenees. Its identity is based on a subtle balance between port activitynatural heritageCatalan culture and quality of life.

With about 4,000 inhabitants and a density higher than the average for the department, Port-Vendres cultivates a lively atmosphere but on a human scale, where fishermen, permanent inhabitants, visitors and lovers of the Côte Vermeille meet.

A strategic Mediterranean port at the heart of the local economy

The port of Port-Vendres is one of the major assets of the municipality. Unlike other ports on the Côte Vermeille which are mainly oriented towards yachting, this one retains a very active commercial, maritime and traditional vocation .
According to the document provided, it is a preferred French continental port for Mediterranean flows:
  • arrival of fruit and vegetables from the countries of the Mediterranean basin (Morocco, Egypt, Cyprus, etc.),
  • connections with producers in West Africa, South America and South Africa,
  • specialized equipment to handle more than 200,000 tons of goods per year,
  • Turnover of around 45 million euros.

The port is also home to a well-established fishing activity, extended by fish markets and local restaurants promoting seafood.
Its geographical position and proximity to the international market from Saint-Charles to Perpignan strengthen its role in the Mediterranean supply chain. This economic dynamism contributes greatly to the animation of the city and its regional attractiveness.

The Côte Vermeille: a unique territory between turquoise sea and terraced vineyards

Port-Vendres occupies a central place on the Côte Vermeille, one of the most remarkable coastlines in France. This coastal ribbon, which stretches from Argelès-sur-Mer to the Spanish border, is renowned for:
  • its rocky coves bathed in deep blue water,
  • its hills covered with terraced vineyards ,
  • its typical Mediterranean villages: Collioure, Banyuls, Cerbère,
  • its exceptional lights, which inspired Matisse and Derain.

The Côte Vermeille enjoys more than 320 days of sunshine per year and has been on the UNESCO tentative list for its landscape heritage since 2022.

A recognition that underlines the heritage and natural value of this Catalan coastline.

Unspoilt nature: the Cerbère-Banyuls marine reserve

A few kilometres south of Port-Vendres is the Cerbère-Banyuls Marine Nature Reserve, the first marine reserve in France.
  • 650 hectares of protected area,
  • 7 km of coastline,
  • remarkable biodiversity (posidonia, corbs, groupers, etc.),
  • A popular site for scuba diving, snorkeling and educational activities.

This reserve contributes greatly to the ecological reputation of the Côte Vermeille and attracts thousands of visitors each year who are sensitive to the beauty and fragility of the Mediterranean coast.

A privileged geographical location and easy accessibility

Port-Vendres benefits from a strategic location:
  • 2 km from Collioure,
  • about 32 km from Perpignan,
  • in the immediate vicinity of Spain (Port-Bou).

The commune is served by:
  • the Narbonne – Port-Bou railway line,
  • the D114 (coastal road via Collioure),
  • the D914 (direct link with Perpignan),
  • regular  bus lines (540, 541),
  • seasonal maritime shuttles linking Collioure and Argelès.

This accessibility reinforces the tourist attractiveness of Port-Vendres while facilitating its role in regional economic exchanges.

A rich and living cultural heritage

Port-Vendres has a remarkable heritage, recognised by the classification as a Remarkable Heritage Site in 2020. Notable monuments include:
  • the Obelisk, a unique monument in France dedicated to Louis XVI during his lifetime,
  • the Dome and the remains of the Horseshoe barracks,
  • the Cap Béar lighthouse, classified as a historical monument, overlooking the Béar mountain.

In addition:
  • regular underwater archaeological excavations,
  • a dynamic cultural programme (cinema, exhibitions, shows),
  • many shops and a lively market around the Place de l'Obélisque.

The Catalan cultural identity is reflected in the architecture, traditions and local flavours.

Port-Vendres, a territory where life is good

Between its active port, its spectacular Mediterranean landscapes, the richness of its culture and the immediate proximity of Collioure and Spain, Port-Vendres stands out as one of the most authentic places on the Catalan coast.

Its exceptional geographical location, its preserved natural environment, its port dynamism and its heritage make this town a place that appeals to both year-round residents and visitors.
